Don Cherry still got it, according to Navajo trumpet player Delbert Anderson and friends

In 1970 Don Cherry taught at Dartmouth, and in 1995 he died. Ten years later, in 2005 — though thats now 16 years ago-  I interviewed about a dozen of his former students there, plus was given access to a file compiled by Jon Appleton, a music teacher there who claimed responsibility for the residency. Either in my article for the alumni magazine or a longer manuscript I self-published here at Plastic Alto, I mentioned that Don apparently borrowed a flute from the college’s ethnographic collection, but there is no record of his having returned it. There’s a note where he apologies for taking the flute with him to Europe, saying “this flute needs to be heard”.

Delbert Anderson heard that story and wrote a song about it, “I Still Got It”. It’s a funky party number and only loosely references the case. It name-checks Thelonius Monk not Don or Ornette. But it seems that the first world brothers or sisters find it pretty funny, if brother Don was ghosting the Ivy League school (i.e the nations 9th oldest, that started to “civilize the pagans” and has a $8.5B endowment).

There’s actually a whole new suite of music that re-constitutes Don Cherry emphasizing his Chocktaw heritage rather than his Black side. It features Delbert, who I met online at Folk Alliance in February, and Mali Obomsawin, an indigenous woman from Vermont, who is a Dartmouth alumna.

Delbert will be in SF Monday, maybe sitting it with Snot Nose Rez Kids at Bottom of the Hill, maybe at some hoot or open night. They are driving from Gallup, NM to Kern County for a hit then onward to Frisco just as tourists, and a few meetings. (There was a Sac show that showed little sack, as we used to say, in Hanover, when we were the balls).

Delbert Anderson group is in residence at Sonoma State the following week. And he is invited at least virtually to be part of FONT, festival of new trumpet. There is a rumor that producer Chris Seefried who worked with Trombone Shorty wants to help Delbert reach a wider audience. My Don Cherry mentors are Peter Apfelbaum and Steve Bernstein, plus Steve Herzfeld and Fred Haas. Taylor Ho Bynum says he assigns my essay to his students. I may have seen Don just once at The Up and Down Club compilation cd release party, by Prawn Song, well before I knew I was going to be a concert promoter and certainly before I took an interest, via Charlie Hunter, also on Prawn Song, in jazz. In a completely unrelated development, I am doing an Earthwise residency with Caroline Davis (sax) at The Mitch, January 27, 28, 29, plus doing shows with Amendola-Goldberg-Sickafoose (Plays Monk), and Amendola Vs Blades. I did 10 jazz shows this summer, or so.

I will report further on Delbert and Don.

This music reminds me of Boots Riley, Purple Pam, The Coup and “Sorry to Bother You”.

It sort of reminds me that the last assignment I had in advertising was from Young & Rubican or Foote Cone and Belding to come in for $200 and write ads for Chevron, “now with 25 percent more Techroline, it turns your engine into a washing machine” and I told them to go fuck themselves — US had invaded Iraq and people my age were in the streets outside my window yelling “NO BLOOD FOR OIL! – -and instead I took a foxy Black lady named Gabrielle Brown ’85 to Stinson Beach, then gave up my apartment, moved home to my parents’ house and a few months later became this, which I’ve stuck with 27 years. I noticed a sign at the pump “25th Anniversary of Techron”. (Fact-checking my own memoir I learn that a couple years after that came the claymation cars in their ads, to introduce the same product or concept – cleans your engine — and I was just talking about my old friend the dj on KFOG Renee Richardson who voiced one of those little cars – -don’t blame her. I knew her when she had a pierced tongue, was Renee Rotten on Live 105 and Hibernia Beach late nights — good gal).

*I call the Delbert Anderson track source for this screed “I Still Got It” although the file is labeled “Taos Flute (rough mix)”.

Dave Douglas in Berlin, Anoushka Shankar in Hamburg

FIRST I’LL TAKE HAMBURG THEN I’LL TAKE BERLIN; or, I’m Your Gent

Two great shows, for all you Germans and your superfast touring sedans and the highway: Anouska Shankar in Hamburg, Dave Douglas in Berlin. Auto-something. Precision auto, if I pass you just to slow down. Anoushka on the Autobhan.
The agent Todd Walker said yesterday he was off to see Anoushka, I asked him to check her, his client, for a tattoo on her lower back, lumbar 3-6 kind of thing, that I noticed when she was at Stanford a few years back – -I was with Hans Wendl, who is from Munich and ECM. In 2001, with her dad.

Dave Douglas in Ghent tonite but Berlin later — I’m so confused…

Dave is doing ding dong three shows in honor of The Alter. Lamb something. Pretty famous piece of wood. Though he is brassy.

The Weisses I suspect are not really Weisses. We checked the Levi’s back to 1750 or so. On my mom’s side, and I spoke to Craig who worked with Chris who works with Anouska – the nidus of this yarn — and repeated that the Baker’s are actually either Soukoenigs or Sudeniks.

Big world, one love. Plenty skronky.
Auf widerson. Tjat’s all I gat. Gatsby. To be or not to be. I’m just a teenage dirt bag, Andrew. In German the Iron maidens are literally maidens and literally have metal uppers. Steel Pole bath tube, bambi nonymous

Tomeka Reid, Dave Douglas in Germany today

  1. This is from Berkeley Planet, December, 2001 — twenty years ago today — courtesy of something called the internet search foonkshun: Jupiter Dec. 6: Joshi Marshal Project; Dec. 7: AVI Bortnick Group; Dec. 8: Harvey Wainapel Quartet; Dec. 12: Mushroom; Dec. 13: Joshi Marshal Project; Dec. 14: Broun Fellini’s; Dec. 15: Norah Jones and Jim Campilongo; Dec. 19: Spectraphonic; Dec. 20: Joshi Marshal Project; Dec. 21: Crater; Dec. 22: Post Junk Trio; Dec. 27: Joshi Marshal Project; All shows are free and begin at 8 p.m. unless noted. 2181 Shattuck Ave., 843-7625, http://www.jupiterbeer.com.  I was one of only 10 people at that show. I heard about it from Hans Wendl, who was persons 1 and 2 of the 10. Avi Bortnick was from Berkeley before New York and played with John Scofield but also produces and triggers samples via guitar; Harvey Wainapel I saw recently, February, 2020, Mardi Gras it was a Tuesday, right before the lockdown with Beth, Ben and Sheldon clearly netting; Mushroom is Pat Thomas and sometimes Ralph Carney and once Caroleen Beatty; my timeline for Norah is that I saw her at Yoshi’s with Charlie Hunter, was told by Hans that she was Ravi’s daughter but not to repeat that, for 20 years and only then to wait until WordPress was invented; her album came out; the Jupiter show, no one there; Liberty Ellman somewhere in there said that Blue Note was hoping for 20,000 units not “diamond platinum” as of February, 2005, ten million; John Ellis my client for about 13 months stradling my 40th birthday which I also spent with Patricia Barber and Joan Bender, so to speak, dated or married Pavani — slightly post-term in my parallax view – who was friends with Norah so they, for instance, saw SNL as her guests; and although we are discussing a Black singer from England influenced by Nina Simone the agent Todd Walker who covers the waterfront and apparently 2 or more continents mentioned that we had to have our phone meeting around noon because he is off to Germany to see Anoushka. And then in the actual meeting said that the tattoo discussion was “water under the bridge” but I brought it around == the card that is so hard and wild – -is that Leonard Cohen – -just some Joseph looking for a manager — to point out the nice tats on said singer. Stranger.
  2. I guess I should take this opportunit to get the least est fluency about the alter the lamb ghent jan van somthing. I think I saw it in Michael Kimmelman book on art that I used to name check so much. Terry, Terry my Terry, Terry TMW Terry my wife, Terry Acebo Davis MFA said she made some prints referencing Ghent – Terry who had a mega-residency in Belgium. Check back.
  3. Leonard Cohen thing TBA
  4. Kudos and huzza to Carla Kihlsteadt and her brood in Cape Cod; to Bambi Marianne in Petaluma thanks to Mia in Sf and Miranda from the deli — Roy’s –who I guessed might know Marianne based on her….t…a..t…t…oos.
  5. We are absoFUCKINlutely going to think about drink about Lisa Fay Beatty at Bottom of the Hill, Sunday November 28 i.e. a couple days after thanksgiving, thanking our lucky stars and that we knew her.
  6. As compared to Barbara Manning doing 30 year show for “This Perfect Green Blanket” at The Mitch five days before Thanksgiving and 8 days before the Lisa Fay fete. November 2 0 at The Mitch. Probably cap the attendence at 10o peeps but who are we kidding and yes Green Day, Weezer and FallOut Boy grossed $4m per show at Oracle Park and Dodger Stadium.
  7. Saw Chris Strausser at Colts-Niners. Shouted and he wavied back.  The old navy bravey wavey. Georgia and Wallis.
  8. Shows are piling up, like moss on a pine at Sea Ranch: Diunna Greenleaf, November 18; Bhi Bhiman, Syvlie Simmons, Aleta Hayes and Charith Classical Revolution, November 12; Delbert Anderson quartet somewhere in the Bay Area on November 8, four days hence. Scott Amendola with Wil Blades in December at The Mitch, his debut there. Amendola Goldberg Sickafoos Plays Monk at The Mitch in January; Caroline Davis three show residency around the 28th my birthday; Greaseland All Stars featuring Kid Andersen and his wife Laura Leuschner – another thing I need to wrap my tongue around or my brain – the spelling, how to say it – for purely professional and journalistic reasons — tongue in the sense of idiolect; gotta fix the odd Anouska Anoushka, too; MC Lars and a single about Hamlet, David Foster Wallace, Wheatus, Infinite Jest….creeps at this petty pace. So long Marianne gotta goo. Said the spider too its prey.

he tried in his way to be free, which reminds that I just read in “The End Of The Golden Gate” Peter Coyote recapping the striving for authenticity that formed and folded Diggers, Sf Mime Troupe and too few other movements, maybe Earthwise can try harder to be like that although I was just starting to think its great to try not to try. Knix leakproof underwear ad VS Walt Clyde Frazier, 1975 screen capture

i was watching a post Halloween “the Shining” and a rap for “blood sweat and pee” came on…

My bad: I am a little off in my conjuring of The Knicks in their heyday which of course was 47 years ago. They won championships in 1970 and 1973. Here is Frazier in game 5 from the baseline to make it 37 to 35 over the Lakers:

Will human beings end up as the family pets?

Maureen Dowd and Steve Wozniak ponder AI gone bad doggy

Apple’s early-adopting, outspoken co-founder Steve Wozniak thinks humans will be fine if robots take over the world because we’ll just become their pets.

After previously stating that a robotic future powered by artificial intelligence (AI) would be “scary and very bad for people” and that robots would “get rid of the slow humans”, Wozniak has staged a U-turn and says he now thinks robots taking over would be good for the human race.

“They’re going to be smarter than us and if they’re smarter than us then they’ll realise they need us,” Wozniak said at the Freescale technology forumin Austin. “We want to be the family pet and be taken care of all the time.”

“I got this idea a few years ago and so I started feeding my dog filet steak and chicken every night because ‘do unto others’,” he said.

Met a nice man named Barram at the Stanford basketball game. Wonder what he thinks of all this, having worked at Apple, HP and Clinton Administration?

With so many rapid technological changes, we think that this may actually be the last transition where the transition team will need 90,000 square feet of office space and 500 computers in one location in Washington, DC. For example, staff of both campaigns are already linked in virtual space. Compare this to the last transition in which laptops were invisible and wireless technology barely existed.

We already see that many of the administrative paper-based transactions of 1992 will now be done electronically, saving time and money for the taxpayers. We think that the preparations GSA has already made, including taking advantage of technology, will help make the 2000-2001 transition, though short, a smooth transition.(2002)

Gunn achieves quintile of CCS football supremacy

Senior co-captain Eric Wang #52 who had four tackles the previous week in Cupertino

Gunn Titans under leadership of Jason Miller, head coach, and James Lambert, quarterback in the run-oriented Wing T offense, is 7-2 (after a 50-20 thrashing of Fremont Friday).

Gunn is ranked #41 in the section by maxpreps statistical algorithm— which favors Paly 5-4 in the upper De Anza to Gunn’s relegation El Camino. But its 7 wins is equaled or bettered by only 17 teams. Therefore you could say that Gunn is in the top quintile of the Central Coast Section, CCS, with St. Francis, Serra, both Menlos and Los Gatos. The Titans, sometimes known as Big Red, are in the eighteenth percentile of the 93 teams. This is following a 5-0 spring season that was Gunn’s best result since 1971. And frosh-soph Little Red had an equally impressive outing winning league, perhaps for the first time. Gunn is second in league at 5-1, behind Los Altos, 5-0 but prevailing in head to head.

Miller reported that Monta Vista will forfeit, 1-0 officially, so Gunn will enter CCS berth at 8-2 overall.

Paly’s division gets four berths so they advance scrapingly, raspando as Portola might have said in 1769.

Miller denied that 10 wins was a goal of his, which would mean a feast of two holiday playoff counting coup. I dream of a crosstown tilt with Blondie.

edit to add: Miller sent me some stats. Here are tackling totals: Velasquez, 18; P. Dobrov, 5; N. Panousis, 4 (Note: he also totaled 74 yards receiving on 2 catches); Kapoor, 4; Kim, 4 (I sat next to his mother at a team social function, Dafna Zur, the linguist); Davis, 4(met his father, Kenneth and aunt Rashida); Galicia, 3 including a sack; J. Oralevich, M. Dobrov and Varela 1 each.

I shot co-captain Eric Wang, a linebacker and a noted musician as he waited to be introduced for Senior Night. A buddy on the sidelines / Hal Daner Track claimed that Wang is contemplating Carnegie Mellon.  I hope at least Lambert and Wang try Dartmouth. Dartmouth’s best team ever won the 1970 Lambert Trophy if that helps.
And1: Yerba Buena lost to Gunn by 50, but beat James Lick by 50 and San Jose High by 42, both shutouts. Those schools once graduated Jim Plunkett and Jacque Robinson. First time I read about him he was Jock. And Joc Pederson of Paly had more yards than his teammate Davante, and nine hits, three homers in the 2021 MLB playoffs the Bravey.

Andand: coach Jason Miller if you add in the Monta Vista forfeit stands tall at 25-10 all time or 71 percent victorious. That’s roughly twice as winningly as Gunn’s all time slate in 56 seasons. I would estimate Gunn is 250 wins and 500 losses all time, or closer to 200 wins and 360 losses. This hits different. MaxPreps has Gunn at 48-84, 36.363636 under five guys named Moe but not Miller. Earl Hansen, meanwhile, if you excuse the digression into ancient, ancient history was one loss below a two-thirds victory percentage, at 192 wins in 297 starts, 13 seasons with eight or more victories, 14 straight unblemished and state champs in 2010. He’s actually from South Palo Alto, a Cubberley grad, I met him then recognized him from my mic at the Elvin Bishop show, December, 2019 at The Mitch, later had a beer with he and Hans my old coach his classmate. So Jason Miller has a better winning percentage than Earl Hansen here, all time.
I wonder when Gunn got it’s 200th win all time?

Later that night or 1o:45 after polishing off the rest of the candy, me not Coach or I have no idea:

By the way, just wanted to give a slight correction.  Our offense is called the double-wing.  I learned from its creator, Don Markham https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-sep-22-tm-markham38-story.html (From Jason Miller and Steve Clow)
