Gunn Titans under leadership of Jason Miller, head coach, and James Lambert, quarterback in the run-oriented Wing T offense, is 7-2 (after a 50-20 thrashing of Fremont Friday).
Gunn is ranked #41 in the section by maxpreps statistical algorithm— which favors Paly 5-4 in the upper De Anza to Gunn’s relegation El Camino. But its 7 wins is equaled or bettered by only 17 teams. Therefore you could say that Gunn is in the top quintile of the Central Coast Section, CCS, with St. Francis, Serra, both Menlos and Los Gatos. The Titans, sometimes known as Big Red, are in the eighteenth percentile of the 93 teams. This is following a 5-0 spring season that was Gunn’s best result since 1971. And frosh-soph Little Red had an equally impressive outing winning league, perhaps for the first time. Gunn is second in league at 5-1, behind Los Altos, 5-0 but prevailing in head to head.
Miller reported that Monta Vista will forfeit, 1-0 officially, so Gunn will enter CCS berth at 8-2 overall.
Paly’s division gets four berths so they advance scrapingly, raspando as Portola might have said in 1769.
Miller denied that 10 wins was a goal of his, which would mean a feast of two holiday playoff counting coup. I dream of a crosstown tilt with Blondie.
edit to add: Miller sent me some stats. Here are tackling totals: Velasquez, 18; P. Dobrov, 5; N. Panousis, 4 (Note: he also totaled 74 yards receiving on 2 catches); Kapoor, 4; Kim, 4 (I sat next to his mother at a team social function, Dafna Zur, the linguist); Davis, 4(met his father, Kenneth and aunt Rashida); Galicia, 3 including a sack; J. Oralevich, M. Dobrov and Varela 1 each.
I shot co-captain Eric Wang, a linebacker and a noted musician as he waited to be introduced for Senior Night. A buddy on the sidelines / Hal Daner Track claimed that Wang is contemplating Carnegie Mellon. I hope at least Lambert and Wang try Dartmouth. Dartmouth’s best team ever won the 1970 Lambert Trophy if that helps.
And1: Yerba Buena lost to Gunn by 50, but beat James Lick by 50 and San Jose High by 42, both shutouts. Those schools once graduated Jim Plunkett and Jacque Robinson. First time I read about him he was Jock. And Joc Pederson of Paly had more yards than his teammate Davante, and nine hits, three homers in the 2021 MLB playoffs the Bravey.
Andand: coach Jason Miller if you add in the Monta Vista forfeit stands tall at 25-10 all time or 71 percent victorious. That’s roughly twice as winningly as Gunn’s all time slate in 56 seasons. I would estimate Gunn is 250 wins and 500 losses all time, or closer to 200 wins and 360 losses. This hits different. MaxPreps has Gunn at 48-84, 36.363636 under five guys named Moe but not Miller. Earl Hansen, meanwhile, if you excuse the digression into ancient, ancient history was one loss below a two-thirds victory percentage, at 192 wins in 297 starts, 13 seasons with eight or more victories, 14 straight unblemished and state champs in 2010. He’s actually from South Palo Alto, a Cubberley grad, I met him then recognized him from my mic at the Elvin Bishop show, December, 2019 at The Mitch, later had a beer with he and Hans my old coach his classmate. So Jason Miller has a better winning percentage than Earl Hansen here, all time.
I wonder when Gunn got it’s 200th win all time?
Later that night or 1o:45 after polishing off the rest of the candy, me not Coach or I have no idea:
By the way, just wanted to give a slight correction. Our offense is called the double-wing. I learned from its creator, Don Markham https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2002-sep-22-tm-markham38-story.html (From Jason Miller and Steve Clow)
