Director Bong Joon Ho prepares to take a bow, as first foreign film director to win Best Picture.

Dear relatively short and random list of friends:
I want to share with you my enthusiasm and
anticipation for a movie that is opening tomorrow
called “The Host.”
It’s playing at Century Mountain View on the Peninsula
and at the Embarcadero in SF.
It’s a major-distribution film but I feel a certain
in-the-know giddiness about it sort of like I felt
when I saw Richard Linklater’s “Slackers” or Spike
Lee’s “Do The Right Thing”.
This film may herald the arrival of a major cultural
voice in director Bong Joon-Ho. The film grossed more
than $100 million in Korea — breaking their box
office record — yet I feel that this guy speaks for
me, my generation and the “indie” nation; he’s not a
strictly commercial phenomenon.
The movie is something like a monster movie but has
deeper meaning and a point of view. It’s sort of like
“Jaws” meets “Team America” (the “South Park” anti-war
satire). He’s good with details and relationships.
There’s also a local angle in that the CG was made by
SF’s The Orphanage, a rising star in movie animation.
I had never heard of Bong until the Bay Guardian’s
cover story last week. But I was lucky enough to hear
him speak in person Monday at a mini-retrospective of
his work at Clay Theater in SF hosted by SF
International Film Festival.
I’m thinking of gathering some people to see this film
locally and maybe hosting/producing some type of
satellite event to promote his work or the film.
(Although I am a recovering concert promoter and have
been relatively undirected lately, I also once
produced a benefit screening of Jessica Yu’s
“Breathing Lessons” plus the Tin Hat Trio animation
live soundtrack concert back in the day….).

P.S. Based on my viewing Monday of his previous films,
I’m betting that “The Host” also showcases Bong’s ear
for film music. I liked the music for his “Memories of
Murder” by Japanese jazz pianist Taro Iwashiro, for
example.
One I am reading about in today’s Chronicle the other I bought yesterday at Bell’s books along with call of the wild and a collection of ring Lardner; I gave the Jack London to a young person named Zakiyya who was trying to sell chocolate bars for a bogus Charity

Paul Hanley was my baseball teammate for Key Chevrolet Expos Los Altos Hills Senior Little League when we were 15, in summer of ‘79, that is to say, forty years ago.
Today David O’Such told me of Paul’s passing, which was actually in 2016 — I hadn’t spoken to him likely since 1979. We David and I gabbed for about 20 minutes, mostly about the old days but also about real estate trends — he’s a VP with the former Cornish and Carey.
(He also mentioned the too soon passing of another of The Expos Don DeGrasse).

Joe Cannon, 342 appearances in the MLS. — I don’t think we’ve ever met, though I clearly recall Albertin Montoya touting him, ranking him equal to his NCSU roommate Kyle Campbell. Montoya and Cannon won the U-19 national championship.
Which leads me to peeping out two short videos of Allie Montoya, age 15. who scored 20 goals as a freshman at Mountain View High and reportedly has already verbally committed to play for Stanford.
I Remember Paul as the Madison Bumgarner Of our team, the stopper. He was also a stalwart Of Los Altos basketball, alongside Joe Cassin and Ken Runte. (Stalwart, whereas I got on the court only after Gunn went ahead by 20 — I scored 0 points but missed a free throw, which got my name in the box score, 1981 SCVAL championship game, Gunn vs Los Altos, at Foothill College).
Condolences to friends and families of Paul and Don; kudos to The Montoyas, Albertin, Erin and Allison; I forget what made me notice Nolan O’Such’s name — he’s an agent at APA — such that I left a VM for his dad.
And1: O’Such and I spoke for exactly 18 minutes. I also spoke to Steven Bernstein today, also for 18 minutes In both cases, that’s an auspice, in that “18” in Hebrew numerology means “life”.
