Barber and Sung back to back
Two of my favorite pianists, Patricia Barber and Helen Sung, appear next month at SFJazz.
Patty headlines February 12. Helen appears as a side person and sister in sync with Terri Lynn Carrington, Sat the 14. Eric Reed plays that Friday, accompanying Mary Stallings. Quite a Six-hand package, I wonder where they might hang late night for a cutting contest WATCHIt . reminds of one night in Clermont with Henry Butler , Ivan Lewis of Cuba, Mulgrew Miller. Meanwhile Pharoah yes o before a except on SFI, Sanders I call him Little Rock or Farrell has 2 more hits. And speahikng of chix with sticks Alli Miller kumbaya as well.
That’s why I hate the bumper sticker Keep Jazz Alive. You gotta beat them off with a stick.

Hispanos Son El Futuro
Nice chat with Patty Boyd the Demo button queen.
to: Cascada de Flores free show at Mitchell Morgan center in PaloAlto today at 330 to 430
to: Labida Boyd, actually from Cairo, spinning Pasatono y Rupa y corey harris ayer.
to: Eme O right about now (write about now) played Pasatono
to: running into John Morrow Hackman, on his way to grab ephemera at FOPAL book sales, I am going to follow suit.
(Not to rag on John, but he did not know that the South African ParaOlympic champion who killed his partner has a nickname that references a Philip K. Dick based movie that references history of computer science and “turing test”.
Michael Franti: I touch down on mother Earth, I take mud and turn it into pottery (which is also a wild pitch to Sharon Washington)…none of us are experts, we are all beginners.
Yeah, this jumps around. Everybody move!

2.
I caught two and a half of the four-part Gunn hoops quader Friday night, against Mountain View. I shot 77 photos so I really out to update this. The first section above I posted in the first minute of the game, using my hand-held. Today, Sunday, about 45 hours later, I ran into and met for first or second time Gunn coach Brandynn Williams, and we talked for a bit. He said I could interview him post-game at future contests. I asked about Noah Riley, the quarterback I watched play 11 times, and he said “toughest guy on the team”. I suggested the depth but also character of people like Noah could provide an intangible difference to make this team very good to great.

3.
Other people’s research says that 10 Titans scored in the easy win over the nearby Spartans:
Alex Gil: 4-1-9 Tim Sun: 0-1-1 Jonathan Davis: 2-0-4 Chris Russell: 4-1-12 Rohit Sampathi: 0-2-2 Anthony Hu: 2-0-4 Noah Steinbremmer: 0-2-2 David Lee: 2-0-4 Lukas Dorhard: 2-0-4 Sharod Miller: 2-0-4 (I didn’t have a lineup card and had to ask Coach Williams if indeed #50 was the football wide receiver: he looks so much bigger here. Actually some of the spelling looks sketchy so I cannot stand behind the numbers per se: for instance, I met Mr. Dorward and he explained his name is spelled “like Forward but with a D”. I liked a play versus Summit where Dorward took a rebound, hustled up court himself, from forward, went behind his back right to left then threw up court to get an assist on the break, and I even thought: possible point guard?
Selma and Louise

in all seriousness, which of these people just on looks alone would you want in a bar room brawl or in your editorial comics bullpen or at the bookstore?
Colman Domingo plays Abernathy in the new biopic hagiography about MLK, while a Nigerian Brit named David Oyelowo plays the Nobel laureate martyred peace activist and leader. I would do the opposite, have Colman Domingo as MKL and Big O as the butler’s son.
But Colman Domingo is out of closet, so we cannot do that.
Or Ava DuVernay cannot do that, because she is unqualified. An actual director, if you have to go with a relative unknown, could steer Colman into Martin, surely. (But don’t call me “shirley”).
Colman Domingo I met backstage at “Passing Strange” and then I stared at the flyer pinned to my bulletin board but never made it to “Wild With Happy”. He was a preacher’s son and a German performance artist in PS. And yeah, he could play a right wing megalomaniac and actor from Nigeria raising money in Hollywood.
Ava on Terry Gross says that “another filmmaker” bought the rights to the actual MLK material; they should have bought grand rights. Or, I cannot wait for that.
AO Scott, I beg to differ.
I like meanwhile: soundtrack by Jason Moran (from Houston, which has a million key piano march towards musical greatness, not just Jason and the black radio guy), — I would buy the actual soundtrack, I could write about the music supervisions, first rate, or at least interesting, it’s a $20 million film, even with no deal from the estate, so the music budget is at least $500,000 — there’s also Ledisi also known as Ledisi Young as Mahalia Jackson singing over the phone will TBA with the actual title, she from Oakland 510 but also NoLa 504 — Common the light-skinned liberal rapper plays one of the Kingsmen and also he and John Legend mention “Ferguson” on the closing track;
I’m gonna see the joint again just to affirm my first take.
I have a joke about the word “Ejogo” that is too dirty for Plastic Alto.
I like David Oyelowo as Nina Simone. Actually part of my problem is my respect for Ambrose Akinmusire, and being in his proximity enough times to hear him ask “Yorba or Igbo?” when he meets a Nigerian. But a Nigerian who maneuvers his way into $20 Million MLK joint sounds like a weird mix of Ronald Reagan and I don’t know what.
I thought of the guy from Gallipoli and his Jesus thing, Mad Max guy, Mel that’s funny I am stuck on that. Mel Gibson. David Oyelowo is the African Mel Gibson?
There was a trailer for the stupid fifth pressing Philip K. Dick opus and I turn to Terry and say “They auditioned Arnold to play MLK — I’ll be black”.
I found in “Forward” an article about the Jewish community of Montgomery, AL not doing enough for blacks there, but I am pretty sure there were more Jews in these marches than the movie would have it. I actually have a page from Rabbi Sydney Axelrad’s bio that references Mississippi not Alabama but I think helps my point. I could add that later.
Mick LaSalle gives it 3 stars, or man applauding from his seat. Which reminds, when I interviewed Stew for KZSU during “Passing Strange” at Berkeley Rep, the Chron happened to have it’s review that a.m. I had in the car for Stew — I drove him to and fro — and it was a decent 3 star and Stew’s line, both spontaneous in the car and then on the air was “We have actual people standing on the seats and applauding, we don’t need the Little Man version” and in fact from the balcony Door 4 of Roda Theatre at Berkely Rep in honor of Molly Ivans, Kathleen Turner and Stew I did in fact, at least for a moment, stand on my chair and lean forward in a crouch and clap manly. I mean “madly”.
There is a 10:25 a.m. in RWC for you stalkers. (I am the only guy who is both ducking the White Supremacists for supporting blacks, and militant blacks in theory for dissing any MLK joint, plus the Asians (and fans of Armani) for defending the First Amendment rights of Sean Berry, which is exactly why I am at least pump-faking a run at Assembly, Rich Gordon’s seat, speaking of “wild with happy”.

Weiss on Weekly cache: Berman sucks
might run. I would spend $100.000 of my own money on this, and like my three Palo Alto races ( or strolls) would not accept your money or that of special interests, I could probably garner 500 endorsements, mostly average 650 folks, I listed 30 or so in 2014, I’d write another 200 articles on policy, published mainly in my own blog (I wrote 144 between declaring and polls), My campaign would be based on Ralph Nader and George pack Kerr. I also wrote that John Paye should run,
Wow, I’m amazed 44 minutes later and Bill Johnson has not deleted this! I’ll tell you what, what it comes to Marc Berman and Bill Johnson, he was doing a lot more than kissing rings! It’s a mixed blessing that, beyond John Paye (a former Stanford athletic star, a business owner a coach and a heck of a nice guy), I probably know personally 50 people who would be better than me for City Council or Assembly, that’s true. I hardly get a word in edgewise at my Friday breakfast klatch. I’m only #2 in my own domesticity! But if I can get, say, 100,000 new readers to the authors I mention above — people who are way better than me at articulating what a mess we’re in, how far Democracy has run down — that would be worth the investment of my money and my time, for the sake of the community and country. My friend Andres Fajardo — a Harvard-trained inner city MBA and clergy, in the 215, although we were both once both ASB President at Terman then editor in chief at Gunn — asked me recently, while visiting his mom, how many doorbells I had run in the recent campaign: I said “about 100”. He said “Ring 5,000.” So if I run my $100,000 will be spent on a thousand pairs of walking shoes! Actually, Matt Gonzalez, another political maverick, cautioned me about going negative, but really, in the case of people like Marc Berman and their success in our little fish bowl, and as you see above, two-thirds of us think we can do better, or someone can do better. BETTER THAN BERMAN. (and a picture of a mirror, a blank space, reflective) I will feel that much more inspired, actually, if Bill Johnson deletes this. He doesn’t believe in Sullivan v. The New York Times. He says its his duty to protect lousy leadership from fair criticism. (Of Marc, of Pat Burt, and more…) I reference George Packer “The Unwinding” (another Gunn journalist, just incidentally! I also read Jim Newton, from Paly).
43 minutes after that:
And further: I actually, despite the tone of this, would prefer over Berman his fellow Viking alumnus Kyu Young Kim (who I compared to the pre-pubescent rock band The Stinky Puffs): “Iz Kyu Young 2 Young 2 ARB?” (Plastic Alto archives) Berman’s $60,000 was actually the result of dunning slow-pay people from his Bar Mitzvah, friends of his parents.
Breeen’a story says that in 2009 he threw his weight behind Josh Becker, lot of good that did!

Or, the ship I carry in my chest
1. Heritage: California Slim: Music, Magic and Madness, May 5, 2013 (dvd or recordable dvd, copyright 2013 Palo Alto History Association, but may be unique copy, of Andy Bernstein the logistics executive talking about his youth as manager of Sonny Terry and road warrior for Willie Nelson, and producing partner of Greg Rolie at Homer St. Warehouse or “Homer’s Warehouse)
on casual loan from PAHA via Steve Staiger, historian
2.The Bad Plus (w. Wendy Lewis) For All I Care, Heads Up, 2009 on loan from Palo Alto library but truth be told the only track I listened to was Lithium (Nirvana cover, and I posted about that, “book of tears” “I’m not gonna crack” or whatnot the melody is preserved but the lyric is shifting
3. Rupa & The April Fishes, c p 2006 Rupa Marya i.e. self released, predating Cumbancha Deal, and thanks to KZSU dj “Lipida” for playing 4 Rupa tracks today, on request including my fav “Wishful Thinking” I nearly titled this “The Ship That I Carry in My Chest” which I guess means my heart. The word “Mark” is written in someone else’s hand, presumably RM. I have misplaced the liner notes / booklet spearletly (stet) and maybe have an actual autograph or inscription therein or thereout as the case may be, or the booklet separated from the case may be, as the case may be or not to be. Art by Mona Caron.
4. Reggae Songs of Freedom, 3 cd set, I bought from Whole Foods, but I notice or seem to think someone made this from their vinyl collection and not masters, some kind of bootleg. The actual credits are too small to read. “Compiled by The Professor”
5. James Booker, Junco Partner, copy of PA Library, but I certain I own a copy somewhere; 1976 Rykodisc, and not the one that hipped me to Stevenson Palfi; Reminds that last night driving home from Kathleen Turner as Molly Ivins “Red Hot Patriot” I heard, before switching to Wednesday night Live at KZSU featuring Renaissance Fly (Polly Mueller, Larry the O et al) Marian McPartland tape with Paul Schaeffer and I thought it was “Cissy Strut” and I mistook it for Henry Butler solo versus a four-hands.
I think I was tripping on, night tripper, like Mac, “make a better world” by Earl King.
6. Bob Marley Natural Mystic, the lyrics of “War”:
That until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
Dis a war
I own that
7. Los Lobos Goes Disney (from library) not to be confused with Jason Olaine’s “Everybody Wants to be a Cat” various jazz artists, 2009, kind of a waste. Let Lobos be Lobos!!!!! I may have to write that using spray can at Gunn’s N-Building, and then go to jail for 60 days, as a dissident.
If anybody is still listening “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” is by Allie Wrubel and Ray Gilbert.
Whereas I wanna be just like you is written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, not to be confused with the comic-influenced footballer my former neighbor Richard Sherman of Compton and Seattle.
8. Cream, “Wheels of Fire” 1968 two disc set, especially new to me #6 “Politician” my new theme song. I think the live version of “Crossroads” from the Fillmore is the version people here on radio, like “Freebird” live radio edit by Lynyrd, a few years later, but check back. (robert johnson) from library
9. Black Keys Attack and Release, produced by Danger Mouse, not that into. 2008 Nonesuch
on loan
i like the lettering at least, watercolor or faux water color
artwork and design my Michael Carney, managed by John Peets for Q Prime
reminds of my one-sided talk with Michael Cunningham of Seattle office of Red Light which got me thinking about Michelle Shocked at Frost, Bay Area Action Earth Day, 1993, because Jason Colton worked on that show. And then “Memories of East Texas” was cue-drooped into the Molly Ivans bit, and I talked about it with a “Wendy” and usher who looked awfully familiar but was not Wendy Paskin, nice try. I bought tickets to “X’s and O’s a Love Story” on football, later this month at Berkeley Rep partly, or what sealed the deal, was co-starring both Dwight Hicks (49ers) and Marilee Talkington (I met at a BART platform).
Speaking of Berkeley and digressing from a list of cd’s and media in my bag, I like at Freight and Salvage Cris Williamson two-nights nearly sold thru but because features Shelly Doty and Julie Wolf, Ruthie Foster in March, Julian Lage Nels Cline duo this Friday I think, Utah Phillips tribute, and across the street Anton Schwart business seminar at JazzSchool and Al Young part of poetry tribute to jazz in Feb. Dig?
I also uploaded from cellphone to email (for possible Plasty) 64 photos on TK topics.
Gotta move my car. Or as Michael Franti (works with Cunningham above) says: everybody let’s move.
