Smith — something common like that, Baker, Smith, whatever, and then somehow led me to discover that Leah Garchik, the Sf Chronicle gossip columnist, has a son Jacob Garchik who plays the bone.

Ok?
And I also took the liberty of searchinjuning Jen Krupa, who now or then played with DIVA…the search “jen trombone” outed Mssr. Garchik…now I also wonder if Lyle Workman is the son of ex-Chronicle writer Bill Workman…(well, he is from San Jose…Workman interviewed me for the Chronicle Peninsula section in about 1996 about a speech I made at Palo Alto City Council (Fazzino, Simitian, maybe Kniss, et al) about saving the New Varsity Theater — he said his son was a musician).

Ms. Garchik wrote back to clarify that it was Steve Turre and not Mal Sharpe who tutelaged her son, back when people were more open with their verbs being transitived.
There is neither space enough nor time but when Walrath was visiting we took in the Jamie Cullum show at the Fillmore. We had had enough after a few minutes frankly but then Jack came running into the poster room to tell me “Hey, he’s playing ‘Haitian Fight Song’ which indeed JC credits with giving him the bass line for his breakthrough “twentysomething.” Encouraged, I sent a note backstage via his mixer that Jack had outed him and we ended up going for drinks later with Jamie and Kim his manager. Nice chaps. His bass player had played with Jack at the Monk comp, not to mix MMMetaphors.

Jamie’s manager is actually named Dana Collins. Dana is also mentioned in Jacob Slichter’s book about his life in Semisonic. Dana was A&R for label in those days. Cool dude.
