I’ve been rocking an old cassette (probably documented and dubbed for me by David Schwartz of Fast Atmosphere) of Mother Hips live at Cubberley Center, January 19, 2001. The document is one of about 40 hours of tapes and cds I have in my vault. The Hips site lists the set list, which is very close to “Green Hills” cd, but also includes a Merle Haggard chestnut, and “Mr. Soul.” Check that it includes “Whiskey River” which is Willie Nelson’s signature song, or one of them, but was actually written by Johnny Bush.
The youtube cite mentions there is a Jay Blakesberg limited edition book out, or was, called “Now We Give It To You.” I met Jay at Brava Theatre where he was selling something he published, about Hunters Point in the 1970s. By Barry Shapiro. I was suggesting that there could be a companion soundtrack. The book is “Dangerously Curious Eye”. And I also now am finding this place
to mention that I caught the event at SFMOMA recently that featured Deer Hoof (with whom I talked up Bruce Beasley) and a film about the Black Panthers, including a live conversation between Adam Pendleton and David Hilliard.
i shouldn’t be plugging this since it will probably sell out without me, but:
posting seems to ease me!!!!
Holiday Shows!
The holidays are upon us! The Mother Hips return to play the annual Great American Music Hall shows this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday, December 17th and 18th! This will be the 17th time the Hips have celebrated the holidays with their fans at this prestigious venue. The Mother Hips are commemorating 20 years of playing together. Some great bands open the festivities both night. On Saturday, a band, whose album Tim Bluhm is producing, called Acacia opens the show followed by the legendary Kelley Stoltz. On Sunday, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers support the Hips, so get there early both nights for some great music. We encourage you to pick up tickets in advance as these shows typically do sell out. Purchasing tickets to the Great American Music Hall can be done in person at GAMH & Slim’s box offices M-F 10:30-6 and on nights of shows or online at http://www.gamhtickets.com
In addition, the band will be ringing in the new year at Marilyn’s in Sacramento! Huckle featuring the former lead singer of Poor Man’s Whiskey, opens the show. A limited number of tickets are still available.
