I spoke to Danny Scher briefly yesterday on this topic on the general strength of the true that of Danny bringing Thelonious Monk to Palo Alto High School in 1968. I mentioned same true that when I spoke to Greg Bridges even brieflier during his KCSM stint the day before. What I did not realize until just now, although I had visited Scher in his offices both at Bill Graham Presents and DanSun and seen the original poster on the wall, was that the event a) took place just months after the assassination of Martin Luther King and b) was described in Robin Kelley’s 2009 biography of Monk, which is excerpted in part on our leading seachinjun:
http://books.google.com/books?id=jk3Bx7KfdO8C&pg=PA398&lpg=PA398&dq=%22thelonious+monk%22+%22palo+alto%22&source=bl&ots=9WxE_PWjkO&sig=bE2q6_Uuj6FhfxQ0CF_cnO79XMU&hl=en&ei=x9iCTcbqCZG4sAP-8Pj3AQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBQQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22thelonious%20monk%22%20%22palo%20alto%22&f=false
or search “thelonious monk” + “palo alto” and see for yourself
which trumps Bud Shank Surf Music which is a wild goose chase in that it was not actually a live concert I don’t think just a screening of the film with prerecorded soundtrack.
this is an particularly weissian digression but was pleased to note danny scher mention in brooklyn vegan (seems worth working in here, the blog; has ted leo at their sxsw showcase):

about Bill Graham Foundation, Dan on board with
Danny Scher (not Bud Shank) also produced a film about the Heath Brothers:

cross referencing my previous message of “Mal Sharpe Has A Posse” which was an event-within-event at Steve Bernstein cd release party at BOTH in 2008. Idea came from seeing Mal Sharpe entering Charlie Hunter show at Yoshi’s with Danny Scher and Danny’s teenage son. That is, Mal’s posse is The Scher Gang.
I reminded Danny that I had seen him at that date but did not bring up my subsequent harassment of poor Mr. Sharpe. You can hear my heckling Bernstein on the tape of the event and Steven saying “enough with Mal Sharpe already.” He had Cressman in his band, of course. Mal was supposed to narrate an auction of donated art, including Syrett’s version of Mal, but had a gig that night in Marin and did not watch to brave the bridge in the high winds and storms.
