Dick Fregulia Day in Palo Alto

TODAY APRIL 4, 2024 IS DICK FREGULIA DAY IN PALO ALTO

Dick Fregulia plays at 7:30 tonite — jazz piano trio — at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto, California, near Stanford, near San Francisco, near the sun and the stars and the moon above.

Dick is Palo Alto High class of 1958 — where he enjoyed basketball — and Stanford class of 1962. By my math — being a Dartmouth grad, class of ’86 — that makes Dick 83 or 84 years of age, if I recently turned 60.

Besides his prowess and considerable accomplishment as a piano player and composer and arranger and band-leader and sideman and accompaniment for example for singers, Dick is also an educator, having taught at a public high school in Marin for many years. I want to say Tamalpais High but frankly as a Palo Altan myself I don’t really care to discern the distinction between, say Fairfax and Mill Valley  or Sausalito —unless he was from or or Rancho Nicasio which is a world unto itself — and we had a mayor here whose husband was actually from Rancho Nicasio — if you excuse the digression. Dick Fregulia still holds down a weekly gig at Marin Joe’s I think it was.

But the main reason besides his show tonite 7:30 at the Mitch with Earthwise that today is Dick Fregulia Day — April 4 — Four Four — that’s almost a jazz thing — before there was Take Five there was Four Four not as a song but as a practice — in Palo Alto — as I was saying— or writing — or not writing — first thing this morning although so far all I’ve done is ring old friends and bend the ears of strangers – -wow, now it’s nearly 1 pm and only four hours until load-in and six point five take five until the hit.
