Music of Tom Harrell f Luis Perdomo, Adam Cruz, Ugonna Okegwo
(Tom and Angela, his manager/wife, arrived 24 hours in front of the trio, preparing for a 2-show West Coast run; Angela called to say there was a mishap and they were at Mills Hospital, after checking in to an airport motel – I had them at the Sheraton for day of show, four rooms. After 30 hours of ups and downs, we decided it was best if the trio performed without Tom. Ugonna said: “Tom cannot be hear tonite, except in spirit; we are playing his music”. He was back to himself that Saturday at Soka; when I met Tom, for the first time, in the ER, he had his trumpet case as a bedside table, propping within reach a plastic bottle of juice. I said something about his not wanting to risk leaving his instrument in the hotel and Angela said, No he wanted to practice; the hospital would not permit such, although they later sent their CEO to check in on him and meet-and-great. I told them that his real name was “Tom Harrell” but he was better known by his stage name “Chet Baker”…since it was a free show, at Palo Alto Art Center, there were only a few complaints about the program change; I felt a little bad that Dick Fregulia, a collaborator of Tom’s from fifty years ago, had driven down from Marin.

(Listening to Spoon “Written In Reverse” makes me think I can hire Britt Daniels to play solo at The Mitch — which is better than a 45 minute set before Beck and Cage The Elephant, plus I booked him into The Cub his first tour….)
