As a former Gunn basketball player, I noted with interest that other Gunn rooters, parents or neighbors of current students, told me that Cameron Lee, who took his own life in November, was a basketball player, and likely Varsity player. His first cousins, it was pointed out, are the two Lee-Heidenreich boys, who were among the most skilled and at times, outright beautful players on Gunn’s team, which won 22 games.
At the Gunn-Paly game February 7, I shot the above photo: the rooter’s shirt seems to say LEE #14. I presume it is a tribute to his former schoolmate. I was touched, and wanted to share this.
edit to add: a team of 3 student journalists posted this “live blog” account of the night, which has more than 200 posts and close to 2,000 words. It was a memorable evening, and despite my partisanship, we acquitted ourselves well as a community. I’d still like to hear some perspectives on the use of our national anthem as a taunt, or what was it? And not to distract from the eloquence of Cameron’s friend.
