Music is data (work in progress – notepad)

ge ocarinaI’m still the dissident claiming music is the thing coming out of your amp or mouth and not recorded data, but for some reason I am reading up on some of the leading terms and players in that admittedly large other world. See also, David Lowery’s writings on this topic, at Trichordist.

Stop reading here as this is just a set of links and you cannot actually tell what I am thinking here (unless you are that much smarter that I realize)

Saw in Bloomberg magazine a back page article about Luke Wood, former Dreamworks A&R, as president of Beats, who are starting a music sharing service.

edita, 4/1/14:

Bob Lefsetz on “Apple buys Beats”:

which is probably a very well-done April Fool’s Prank or he scooped the entire media industry. Here is beats by dre homepage.

From my six-feet-worth of in-box at the Earthwise headquarters:

“In Concert with Technology” by Linda Yu, Stanford Daily 2/1/12, i.e. this has been floating on a sea of other clippings and the like for two years, two months. Ge Wang, , developer of Smoule, including “Ocarina”, “Magic Piano” and “I Am T-Pain”. After completing his graduate studies at Princeton, Wang applied for an assistant professor at CCRMA.  Worked with Jeffrey Smith, ’89 M.S. ’89 PhD ’13. In March, 2011, following the earthquake in Japan, more than 3,000 Smule users uploaded “Glee Karaoke” app “Lean on Me”.

Freelancer Dan Frost in Chron, 2013: (smule is short for “sonic mule” which itself is from an Isaac Asamov short story, “the Mule” — see also Dr. John “Where Y’at, mule?”)

David Pogue in NyTimes about apps generally, as an Apple phenomenon, and uses Ocarina by Smule as case-study, in Feb., 2009:

His bunghole is speaking — this is GE Wang in one of 128 Smule videos:

(the cornholio test)

(this is an aside, but I wonder how many PhD.’s in cultural studies there are on “cornholio”:

and further aside, I am wondering about Mike Judge’s “Silicon Valley” spoof, coming up on one of the premium channels — have GE Wang and Judge met, does he appreciate Beavis being used to sell digital ocarinas?)

Patrick Day of LA Times has a nice preview of Judge’s HBO show, which premieres Sunday, April 7.

GE Wang’s page at Stanford, which links through to class curricula plus student projects in recent years:

Veronica Weber (her real name) of Palo Alto Weekly short film about Stanford Laptop Orchestra, also known as Slork:

edit to add: I caught Mike Judge’s show on HBO HD on demand. The app in question is actually a music app, so right on. Meanwhile, the preview in The New Yorker has dialogue bits about the need to be “an asshole” to succeed. In my mind I was rectifying GE Wang’s “bunghole” with the Judge “Silicon Valley” “assholes”. Pretty good fit. I was tempted to call the 650 number I could see on a sign outside the fictitious Atherton Clinic, the one where the doctor wanted his patient to invest in an app that would distinguish between panic attacks and heart attacks.
